The oil rich Arab nations are looking to help Egypt's new leader and prevent the Muslim Brotherhood rebuilding a legitimate support base on the back of a weak economy.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are thought to be readying a financial aid package of $20bn (£12bn) to boost Egypt’s economy and support the incoming government of ex-Field Marshal Abdulfattah el-Sisi.

The oil-rich Middle East powerhouse Arab nations, which combined account for more than a tenth of the world’s supply of crude, have already held preliminary talks with authorities in Cairo to discuss how the line of funding will be structured, according to a report in the Arabic media over the weekend.

Abu Dhabi has already pumped $4.9bn into supporting the economy in Egypt - the most populous Arab states in the Middle East - as it seeks to support Mr El-Sisi and prevent the Muslim Brotherhood from rebuilding a legitimate support base on the back of a weak economy. The government in Riyadh has also pumped almost $5bn into supporting the Egyptian economy already as it seeks to influence events in Cairo and prevent a reawkening of political unrest across the region.

The brotherhood has been banned as a “terrorist” organisation in Egypt since the overthrow of Mohammed Morsi.

Qatar’s support for the brotherhood movement especially in Egypt had driven a wedge between Doha, Saudi Arabia and a number of other Gulf states . However, all sides in the Gulf Co-operation Council agreed to resolve their differences on the issue last month.

Egypt’s economy - once seen as progressive in terms of liberalisation and foreign investment - has failed to recover since the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime during the Arab Sprint uprisings which saw a number of governments in the region fall. El Sisi - who is backed by the army - is understood to have won 97 pc of the vote, according to state media last week.

Meanwhile, Egypt stock market plunged on Sunday amid reports that a new government would move quickly to impose a capital gains tax. The EGX30 benchmark index closed 4.22pc lower, or at 7,894.7 points, continuing to slide after trading was suspended after the broader EGX100 index fell by 5pc.

During the Arab Spring uprisings the Egyptian stock market was closed for a period of months.

FCO warns of travel to Mombasa

Tui Travel customers evacuated from Kenya

Tui Travel customers evacuated from Kenya

Thomson and First Choice clients are being evacuated on charter flights from Kenya’s coast after the Foreign & Commonwealth Office warned them to leave because of terror threats.

Thomson said on its website that the decision to repatriate all customers currently on holiday in Kenya was a “precautionary measure”.

Both Tui Travel-owned companies said they were cancelling flights to Mombasa until at least October.

Half of the tourists were due to leave yesterday from the international airport at Mombasa, Kenya’s main coastal city. The rest were booked on a second chartered aircraft due to fly home today. The company was understood to have about 500 clients in the country.

Other British tourists booked by other companies were not being evacuated, a holidaymaker staying a hotel on Diani beach south of Mombasa and outside of the FCO’s new alert zone, told The Telegraph.

The FCO warned on Wednesday that tourists should not travel to Mombasa city or to popular beaches to its north because of the threat of terrorism, and those already there should leave immediately.

A Tui Travel spokesman confirmed that it had evacuated all its customers from Kenya “as a precaution”, including those whose accommodation was outside the FCO’s alert zone.

"The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is now advising against all but essential travel to Mombasa island, Kenya," the company said.

"Thomson and First Choice have been continuously monitoring the situation as it developed and have been working very closely with the FCO and follow its advice at all times.

"As a result of the change in FCO advice, the decision has been taken to cancel all our outbound flights to Mombasa, Kenya up to and including 31 October.

“As a precautionary measure, we have also taken the decision to repatriate all customers currently on holiday in Kenya back to the UK.

"Our experienced overseas resort team are updating all our customers currently on holiday in Mombasa of the change in FCO advice."

The company added that customers due to fly to Mombasa before November should contact its call centre or their travel agent.

"We understand that many customers will be very disappointed about the cancellation of their holiday to Kenya," it said.

"However, in these types of situations we have to follow the FCO advice."

Muriithi Ndegwa, managing director of the Kenya Tourism Board, said: "We are indeed disappointed by the FCO's decision to enforce this advice against non-essential travel to some areas of Mombasa.

"We will work tirelessly with the British Government to demonstrate the enhanced security in place to ensure the safety of British visitors.”

The TUI-owned operator, Thomson, is offering engaged couples a unique way to enjoy a destination wedding in Cyprus with the launch of the #YourBigDay campaign. A panel of judges will choose a winning couple and Thomson’s Facebook fans will then choose the bride’s dress, the music, the colour scheme, and the theme for the stag and hen parties.

Thomson will be giving couples the chance to win a unique wedding in Cyprus where the details will be crowd-sourced by the tour operator’s Facebook community.

The TUI-owned tour company has launched the #YourBigDay campaign where engaged couples will have the chance to win a destination wedding that will take place at Thomson Platinum Athena Beach Hotel in Cyprus. All flights, transfers, accommodation, all-inclusive board and the wedding breakfast are included in the prize.

Thomson’s #WeddingWednesdays, on Facebook will allow fans to suggest the colour scheme for the destination wedding, the song for the first dance, the bride’s and bridesmaid’s dresses, and the themes for the stag and hen dos.

The most popular suggestions will be put to a Facebook vote and the wedding planners will arrange the big day.

Loved-up couples have until 12th May, 2014 to enter and the winning pair will be chosen by a panel of judges. The couple will share their wedding planning journey by writing regular posts on the Thomson blog.

"Crowd sourcing a wedding is a first for the UK, a first for Thomson and a first for the holiday industry,” explained Jeremy Ellis, the Marketing and Digital Director for Thomson and First Choice.

"With one in five weddings now taking place abroad, more and more couples are looking to destination weddings as both something different to the norm, and also a more cost effective option.”

He added: "We are thrilled to be able to offer our planning expertise in resort, as well as the input of our Facebook users, to make one lucky couple’s wedding dream a reality."

Cyprus is one of the favourite wedding destinations for many brides and grooms. The all-year-round warm weather, white sand beaches, rugged coastline, turquoise ocean, majestic mountains, historical architecture, delicious traditional cuisine, and hospitable island residents make it a fantastic choice for any special romantic occasion.

Cyprus is well known as the Island of Love because of its history as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, and the island nation is a popular choice for idyllic weddings abroad and romantic honeymoons.

Agents' anger over Aphrodite Hills 'farce'

Independent agents have reacted with fury to news that Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel in Cyprus could become a Thomson Sensatori hotel in 2015.

Agents warned they would no longer proactively sell the resort if it were sold exclusively through Thomson in the UK. One agent put the property on stop-sale.

Thomson announced it would open three more hotels under its five-star Sensatori brand for summer 2015, including Aphrodite Hills, which it said would close for refurbishment this winter.

The move provoked an angry reaction from the trade and the hotel, currently part of InterContinental Hotels Group.

The group denied a deal had been signed and called Thomson’s statement “premature”. The hotel recently hosted 50 independent agents and operators on a fam trip.

In a statement it said: “Our aim is to conclude discussions within the next few weeks, during which Thomson Sensatori will not be able to offer this product for sale in its new summer brochure or on the web.”

Agents branded the lack of clarity a “complete farce”, saying they would not sell the resort as a Sensatori hotel because

Thomson’s online discounting made it impossible to compete on price.

Nick Harding-McKay, managing director of Travel Designers, attended last month’s fam trip. His agency has put the resort on stop-sale.

“Either a deal has been signed or it hasn’t,” he said. “It’s a brilliant resort, but if they knew they were going to sell it through Thomson why did they waste lots of agents’ time?”

Miles Morgan, owner of Miles Morgan Travel, added: “We will not actively promote this if it is Sensatori because nine times out of 10 the client will find it cheaper online; you lose the booking or have to match it and lose money.”

Colletts Travel managing director Roy Collett said: “If Aphrodite Hills goes down that road we just will not promote it.”

Thomson will also offer the Sensatori Resort Ibiza (currently Insotel Club Tarida Beach) and build a Sensatori Resort Fethiye in Turkey, for summer 2015.

Thomson was unable to comment as Travel Weekly went to press.

Aphrodite Hills denies Thomson Sensatori deal

Aphrodite Hills denies Thomson Sensatori deal

One of the best-known hotels in Cyprus has denied that a deal has been struck to rebrand it as a Thomson Sensatori property.

The Aphrodite Hills Resort in Paphos was responding to an announcement by Thomson that it will become one of three new Sensatori hotels to become exclusive to the Tui flagship operating brand.

A spokesman for the hotel described the Thomson announcement as “premature” as discussions were still ongoing.

“Our aim is that these discussions be concluded within the next few weeks, during which Tui (Thomson Sensatori) will not be able to offer this product for sale in their new summer brochure or the web,” the spokesman said.

“In the meantime sales for the InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel continue to grow, with sales increasing year on year.

“Until these discussions are finally concluded the operation of the InterContinental hotel will remain as normal throughout the year and will continue to serve the UK market with our worldwide renowned high standards, ensuring customers enjoy a unique and fantastic experience.”

The spokesman said: “We would like to confirm that discussions are still in progress and will continue in this direction for a period of time.

“However, as Aphrodite Hills Resort and Tui continue talks, we wish to stress that no conclusive agreement has been reached, hence the reason that that no official announcement has been made by either Aphrodite Hills or IHG to this respect.”

Unlicensed wedding planners in Cyprus

Warning over unlicensed wedding planners in Cyprus

Warning over unlicensed wedding planners in Cyprus

The founder of Planet Holidays has called for a crackdown on the growing number of wedding planners in Cyprus offering no financial protection.

Mathilde Robert, managing director of wedding specialist Planet Holidays, said she had witnessed a steep increase in former operator employees setting up as wedding planners in Cyprus.

She said: “It seems like anybody who’s ever worked for a tour operator is becoming a wedding planner. They take clients’ money with no security or protection.

“These are people working from a laptop in a room somewhere – they could collect the clients’ money and disappear.”Robert has spoken to Antigoni Kapodistria of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, who is in charge of wedding tourism in Cyprus, about establishing an association for wedding planners and suppliers in the destination.

The CTO confirmed it was looking into the idea.

Robert also urged agents to advise clients to book with a reputable wedding operator.

She said there were instances of couples buying a holiday with Thomson or Thomas Cook but booking their wedding with local photographers, florists and caterers.

Deputy Paphos mayor Marios Papis recently told the local press that he had received complaints from several companies, including Thomson and Thomas Cook, which said they were losing tens of thousands of pounds each year to unlicensed wedding planners in Cyprus.

Robert said Planet and other operators had to step in when things had gone wrong in the past.

She said: “It’s getting worse all the time, especially with the economic situation meaning a lot of people are out of a job. It’s Cyprus’s reputation that will suffer, and therefore we will suffer.”
